When we begin to take ownership of our lives, we often start by shifting the center of gravity from external advice to internal guidance. In other words, we start to connect with our own navigation system, seeking wisdom that is designed specifically for us. Navigating life with an internal “GPS,” opens individuals to the information that comes directly from the Source, and today I want to look at what that guidance system looks like and how it can be accessed.
Internal guidance can come through in many ways, but here are just a few:
Synchronicities
Synchronicities are highly-meaningful events that occur at the right time, but seem purely coincidental. Synchronicities typically show up in response to our internal requests, questions, or prayers, but they may also occur without our prompting. For example, we may obsess over remembering the name of a song that we heard some years ago, and then within a day or two hear this song on the radio. Or, we may be looking for a job and run into a person in a coffee shop who offers us the exact position we want. Synchronicities often feel like a conversation between us and the universe. They can take any form, but they always come in response to our need. To allow more synchronicities to come through, we simply need to become clear on an intention or need and then let it go, trusting that when the timing is right, the answer will appear in a way that will be easily understood.
Dreams
Dreams serve many functions. Some dreams give us the preview of the future, revealing glimpses of the events to come. Others give dreamers information about what is holding them back and what they should release. Still other dreams give dreamers the opportunity to act out feelings and emotions that would not be healthy to experience in waking life, thus helping individuals process human experience and gain wisdom without any dangerous consequences. Since dreams offer a direct communication from beyond our conscious mind, they usually come through as symbolic non-linear messages and need to be translated into human linear thinking to be understood. Deciphering dreams is a process, but it can be done. Paying attention to dreams and writing them down is always the first step in understanding the messages.
Intuitive guidance
Intuition is something that everyone possesses but not everyone uses. For centuries, we have been told that intuition is intangible, unreliable, and mostly not real. It has also been attributed to women and ridiculed in a concerted effort to discredit women and the connection to Source all at the same time. Intuition, however, is a very real way of communicating with spirit. Like all spirit communication, it is often non-linear and non-verbal. Intuitive guidance often comes through in the form of fleeting emotions, feelings, or knowing. Often after receiving an intuitive communication, an individual will feel that they know something without knowing how they know it. Developing intuition is akin to building muscle. It is very doable but requires some practice. The first step in developing intuition is learning to trust one’s guidance instead of dismissing it.
Body intelligence
Our bodies posses a very high level of intelligence that we mostly do not understand or appreciate. In fact, our bodies often know things before our brains get informed of them. When we tap into our body intelligence, we can get information that is not available externally. For example, while we typically rely on external experts to tell us the best way to take care of our health and physical strength, it is our body intelligence that knows exactly what our bodies need and how to stay well. When we learn to interact with our body intelligence, we gain access to the most powerful guidance that is custom-made specifically for us and our journey. Communication with the body can be done in a variety of ways, but again, it starts with developing trust and a readiness to listen and honor what is being communicated.
The willingness to listen is a key step in connecting with the internal guidance. Acknowledging that guidance is available allows us to engage in the conversation. Another important step is developing the ability to receive the information. When it comes to synchronicities, it may just be a matter of noticing things when they occur, but with other forms of guidance, bringing the information through may require a slightly-altered state of consciousness (or trance) in which the person is internally- rather than externally-focused. This state is naturally reached during dream-time, but a light level of trance can also be accessed through a meditation or hypnosis. When working with hypnotherapy clients, I often take them on hypnotic journeys to receive their internal guidance. Then we reinforce it at the subconscious level to help individuals make the changes they wish.
There are multitudes of ways in which we can connect with our internal wisdom. Synchronicities, dreams, and intuitive communications with body and spirit are just some of them. And when we take the time and effort to tap into our personal guidance system, we can find greater clarity and stronger direction in our lives.
