Many people are curious about hypnosis but worry about safety due to movies or stage shows. These portrayals don’t reflect clinical hypnotherapy.

Can You Lose Control in Hypnosis?

No. You remain conscious and in control the entire time. Hypnosis enhances focus and connects you with deeper parts of your awareness, but it does not make you unconscious or remove free will. You cannot be hypnotized to do anything that goes against your values.

Can You Get Stuck in Hypnosis?

No. This is a myth. You can no more get stuck in a hypnotic trance than you can get stuck in a daydream. Hypnosis is a temporary state. If a session were to be interrupted, you would naturally return to normal awareness.

Are There Side Effects?

While the direct outcomes of hypnosis should be those desired and established by the client, the side effects of this work are usually relaxation, calmness, and a sense of well-being. Some individuals report experiencing increased clarity, emotional lightness, and some temporary tiredness (similar to deep relaxation). When hypnosis is practiced by trained individuals, the negative side effects are extremely rare. However, hypnosis may not be appropriate for individuals with some untreated psychiatric conditions, so they should consult with a licensed professional.

How to Select a Hypnotherapist?

When choosing a hypnotherapist, look for proper training and certification. Seek someone who is supportive, ethical (does not guaranteed results before meeting you), and offers a non-judgmental approach. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. Look for someone you trust and feel comfortable with.

Hypnotherapy is one of the safest therapeutic tools available when practiced responsibly. Fear often disappears once people understand what hypnosis truly is.
