Why Change Can Feel So Hard
Many people know what they want to change — but struggle with how. That’s because most habits and emotional reactions (in fact, more than 90% of our daily behavior) are driven by the subconscious mind, not conscious logic. So when a person makes a conscious decision to create change, the subconscious script ultimately overrides that decision. Hypnotherapy goes beyond the conscious filter and works at the deeper level.
The Role of the Subconscious Mind
The subconscious mind stores habits and automatic behaviors, emotional responses, beliefs about self-worth, and learned coping mechanisms. Its goal is to protect the individual, and it will continue to run old, outdated scripts believing that they are best suited to the individual’s needs.
Unless the stored beliefs and behaviors are addressed and modified at the level where they are stored, they will largely continue to stay the same. Trying to change these patterns consciously can be done, but it can take a long time and can feel exhausting.
What Happens During Hypnosis?
Hypnosis creates a bridge to the deeper levels of awareness. During hypnosis, brainwave activity shifts into a calmer, more focused state, often moving from beta brainwave of alertness to alpha or theta frequency. This shift feels similar to drifting off to sleep (without actually falling asleep). In this state, the nervous system relaxes, mental chatter quiets, and awareness becomes inward-focused. This makes it easier to introduce positive suggestions and imagery aimed at rewriting the subconscious script so that it aligns with your conscious goals and intentions.
Is Hypnotherapy Evidence-Based?
Hypnotherapy can be helpful with a wide range of issues. Research has mostly focused on issues associated with reduction of anxiety, pain management, smoking cessation, and stress-related conditions. There is evidence that hypnotherapy (often used alongside traditional therapeutic approaches) can have a positive impact on the individual’s state of mind and provide support in creating desired behavioral changes.
Why Hypnosis Creates Lasting Change
The lasting change is possible because hypnotherapy does not work at a surface level and does not force change. Instead, it reduces inner resistance and addresses issues at their core. The hypnotherapist introduces alternative perspectives and suggests new behaviors. If those suggestions are accepted, subconscious patterns or scripts begin to align with conscious goals, resulting in a natural and easy change. Several factors can make hypnotherapy more effective and further ensure that the changes that are created last: client readiness and willingness to engage in the process, trust and rapport, client’s clear goals, and finally, repetition and reinforcement. Hypnosis is not magic — it is a collaborative, therapeutic process.
Hypnotherapy works because it respects how the mind naturally functions. When the subconscious mind is engaged with compassion and clarity, change at the conscious level becomes easier and more sustainable.
